The News Article states that:
Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
- In February, 2013 a native woman called Lena Anderson took her life in the back of a police car.
- She was arrested due to concern in her community with intoxication, (as she had a young child).
- She had had previous history of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as mental health issues.
- She was left alone in the back of the police car for 16 minutes, in that time she had managed to hang herself with the drawstring of her pants.
- This hadn't been the first incident in this community, as 2 men burned to death in a police car in 2006.
- To make a change in the native community a labour agreement was reached, which will increase police officer’s wage, and hire an additional 40 officers by 2018.
- However it does not meet the standards of the Ontario Police Service Act.
Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
- This article is violated in the fact that even with this labour act, the Native Canadian community’s Police will not meet Ontario’s standards.
- The community doesn’t access to the same standard of safety that we have.
